Out with the Old… In with the New…

Disney has been very busy as of late announcing numerous changes that could possibly impact your vacation planning (maybe it already has) as I know I merely made an impromptu family visit when I received the word that the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights was coming to a close. Now that we have the majority of the details of what’s to come, let’s talk about what is exactly on its way in and what is unfortunately on its way out.

Out with the old…

  • Main Street Electrical Parade: As of October 9th 2016, the Main Street Electrical Parade will no longer entertain the visitors of the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World but will be returning home to Disneyland in 2017. Hopefully you were able to catch this timeless classic before it packed it’s bags for the return trip home.
  • Disneyland’s Tower of Terror: January 2, 2017 will mark the end of this terrorizing experience to make way for a new Guardian’s of the Galaxy ride. It’s not a total loss however, the Tower of Terror will still be thrilling visitors at Hollywood Studios in Orlando, FL.
  • Hollywood Studios’ Pizza Planet: On January 19th, 2016 this Toy Story themed Quick Service closed its doors for refurbishment but instead received a completely different branding and look. This came at no surprise as it is suspected that Pizza Planet will become a dining experience once ToyStory Land opens. PizzeRizzo, a Muppet-themed dining experience, was announced shortly after the refurbishments became visible. The new restaurant will open November 18th, 2016.
  • DisneyQuest: It was rumored this entertaining, indoor experience would close late 2016 but now latest speculation is DisneyQuest will continue operating into 2017. No formal announcements have been made but the rumors suggest the NBA/ESPN experience is no longer on the table.
  • Typhoon Lagoon’s Shark Reef: On October 3rd, 2016, this experience closed for good. News has circled that a new family ride will be build in its place and be ready for Summer 2017.

In with the new…

  • Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM!: We all knew Disney had something up their sleeves when the Osborne Family Lights ended so the expectations are very high for this new nighttime experience. Disney appears to be pulling out all the stops with this experience offering state of the art sights and sounds in addition to even offering a Holiday Party with desserts and beverages. Reservations are currently available and the show will begin November 14th, 2016.
  • Once Upon a Time: Another nighttime show which will hopefully fill some of the void of recently departed Electrical Parade. This nighttime projection show begins November 4th, 2016. Hopefully with the Christmas paraded and the announcement of this new show, this will hold us over until a new parade finds its way to the Magic Kingdom to replace the void left by the Electrical Parade.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom – Avatar’s Pandora: This has been a topic of discussion for quite some time but “sometime in 2017” as most media outlets have report, should mark the opening of the land of Pandora from the movie Avatar.
  • Disneyland’s Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!: The replacement for the Tower of Terror will open Summer of 2017.
  • Hollywood Studio’s PizzeRizzo: This Muppet-theme dining experience will open November 18th, 2016.

While we are on the topic of new things on the horizon, Disney has several movies coming out in the near future with other’s opening towards the end of the year.

  • Marvel’s Dr. Strange: October 26th, 2016
  • Moana: November 23rd, 2016
  • Rogue One: December 16th, 2016
